Garden irrigation planned around your planting
Planting beds, trees and lawn areas should be considered together with sun exposure, soil conditions and the available water supply. A single timer setting is not a substitute for checking how water is distributed. During the site discussion, identify new planting, established areas, awkward corners and any surfaces that must remain accessible.
Drip irrigation for planting areas
Drip irrigation can deliver water close to the root area of shrubs and trees. The layout needs to account for the planting positions and allow access for inspection. When plants are moved or beds are extended, review the irrigation layout at the same time rather than assuming the existing arrangement still suits the garden.
Sprinkler coverage for lawns
For lawn areas, discuss coverage, head positions and the boundary between grass and hard surfaces. Water spraying onto paths is a reason to inspect the system. Controllers and watering schedules
Ask how the proposed controller and watering areas will match the planting layout, and who will review the settings as conditions change. A new controller alone will not explain a leak or poor coverage. Equipment and settings should be considered as part of the whole system.
Existing garden irrigation: describe the symptoms first
Send photographs and explain when you notice the problem. These observations help frame the assessment; they do not confirm a diagnosis:
- Dry patches: which plants or lawn areas are affected, and whether the pattern changes after watering.
- Persistent wet areas: where water collects and whether it appears during a watering cycle, afterwards or following rain.
- Overspray: which paths, walls or seating areas receive water.
- Changed planting: new beds, removed lawn, relocated trees or other work since the system was installed.
- Unexpected water use: changes you have observed and any known changes to the watering schedule.
Irrigation and drainage are related but different questions. Adding watering time is not an automatic answer to struggling plants, and standing water should be assessed before recommending more irrigation. Water use in Dubai
DEWA recommends watering before 8 am or after 6 pm to reduce evaporation losses, checking sprinkler valves for leaks, keeping heads in good condition and adjusting timers for seasonal demand. What to include in a garden irrigation quotation
Compare proposals using the same scope. Ask the contractor to identify:
- The areas covered and which existing components will be retained.
- The proposed pipes, outlets, valves and controls, where applicable.
- Any excavation, access requirements and reinstatement of disturbed surfaces.
- How the completed system will be checked and its operation explained.
- Maintenance responsibilities, exclusions and any warranty terms offered.
