This is probably the question we get asked most often after “how much will this cost”; natural grass or artificial turf? And the honest answer is: it depends on what you actually want from the space, not which one is objectively “better.” Both have a real place in Dubai gardens. Here’s how we’d actually walk you through the decision.
The Water Argument Isn’t as Simple as People Think.
Artificial grass gets pitched heavily on water savings, and that’s real; no irrigation needed once it’s installed. But it’s worth being honest about the full picture: artificial turf still needs periodic rinsing to manage dust and heat buildup, and in peak Dubai summer, synthetic turf surface temperatures can get uncomfortably hot underfoot in direct sun, sometimes hot enough that walking on it barefoot midday isn’t pleasant. Natural grass, by contrast, actually cools the surrounding area through evapotranspiration; a genuine advantage in outdoor entertaining spaces used through summer evenings.
So the water savings are real, but they come with a heat trade-off that doesn’t show up in most artificial turf marketing.
Maintenance: Where Artificial Grass Genuinely Wins.
If low maintenance is the priority; no mowing, no fertilizing, no irrigation troubleshooting; artificial turf is a legitimate win, especially for owners who travel often or for commercial properties where consistent appearance matters more than authenticity. It also holds up well in high-traffic areas where natural grass would thin out and go patchy.
The maintenance isn’t zero, though: artificial turf needs occasional brushing to keep fibers upright, rinsing to clear dust and pet waste, and infill top-ups every so often. It’s less work than natural grass, but “zero maintenance” isn’t quite accurate.
Longevity and Long-Term Cost.
Artificial turf has a higher upfront cost but no recurring water or fertilizer expense, and quality product typically lasts 8-10+ years before it starts looking worn. Natural grass costs less to install but carries ongoing water, fertilizer, and mowing costs indefinitely; and if irrigation and soil prep weren’t done properly (see our landscaping guide), it may need replacing well before artificial turf would.
Over a long enough timeline, the cost comparison depends heavily on your water tariff, how much lawn area you have, and how well the initial installation was done in either case.
Where Each One Actually Makes Sense.
Natural grass tends to make more sense for:
- Spaces used often for relaxing or entertaining, where the cooling effect and feel underfoot genuinely matter
- Homeowners who don’t mind (or enjoy) some garden upkeep
- Properties with well-designed irrigation already in place
Artificial turf tends to make more sense for:
- High-traffic areas, play areas for kids or pets, or spaces that see heavy use
- Owners who travel frequently or want a maintenance-light solution
- Commercial properties needing consistent, presentable appearance year-round
- Shaded areas where natural grass historically struggled to establish
A Middle Ground: Mixed Landscaping.
A lot of our more recent projects don’t pick one or the other; they use artificial turf strategically in high-traffic or hard-to-irrigate zones, and natural grass or planting in areas meant for relaxing, entertaining, or general garden aesthetic. This tends to get the practical benefits of both without fully committing to either trade-off.

Before recommending either option, we’d want to know: how is the space actually used day to day, how much upkeep are you realistically willing to do, is it shaded or full sun, and is this a residential garden or a commercial property where appearance consistency matters more than authenticity?
