Every few weeks someone sends us a photo of a Pinterest pool and asks, “can we do this?” Nine times out of ten, the answer is yes; but the tile in that photo was probably never tested against a Dubai summer, and that matters more than the color swatch does.
Pool tiles here don’t just need to look good. They need to survive UV exposure that’s intense for eight months of the year, constant chlorine or salt exposure, and, for a lot of villas, minimal maintenance because owners travel for chunks of the year and the pool sits untouched. Here’s what we actually tell people when they ask.
Check the intended use before choosing a tile
Before comparing colours, identify where the finish will go: inside the pool, at the waterline, on steps or on the surrounding deck. Ask the supplier to confirm that the exact tile and any mosaic backing or mounting system are suitable for that location and its water exposure. Daltile’s submerged-use guidance, for example, limits suitability to particular products and mounting systems. Have the installer specify compatible waterproofing, adhesive and grout, with the manufacturers’ curing and pool-filling instructions. For walking surfaces, also confirm suitability for wet use rather than relying on appearance alone.
Glass Mosaic Pool Tiles
Still the most requested option, and for good reason. Glass holds its color far better than most materials under constant sun; you won’t get the chalky fading you sometimes see with cheaper ceramic after a few years. It also has a shimmer under water that photographs well, which is part of why it’s everywhere in villa pools and hotel pools alike.
The trade-off: glass mosaic is grout-heavy since the pieces are small, and grout lines are where algae and calcium buildup tend to start if maintenance lapses. It’s also on the higher end of the price range, and skilled installation matters a lot; an uneven glass mosaic job is very visible in a way that larger tiles can hide.
Best for: homeowners who want a resort look and are committed to regular maintenance or a service plan.
Porcelain Tiles
Porcelain has improved a lot as a pool material over the last several years. It’s dense, low-porosity, and resists staining better than most natural stone, which is a real advantage in Dubai’s hard water. Fewer, larger tiles also means fewer grout lines than glass mosaic; less surface area for buildup.
The look is more matte and less shimmery than glass, which some homeowners prefer for a cleaner, more architectural finish, and others feel reads as slightly less “pool resort,” more “modern minimalist.”
Best for: lower-maintenance households, and commercial properties where a clean, cool aesthetic matters more than sparkle.
Natural Stone (Travertine, Slate, Pebble)
Natural stone and pebble products offer different colours and textures, but their suitability depends on the exact product and where it will be installed. Ask for confirmation of submerged-use suitability before choosing a stone or pebble mosaic for the pool interior. For steps and other walking surfaces, discuss wet-use suitability and underfoot comfort using a sample of the specified finish.
Get the supplier’s cleaning and maintenance instructions for the selected stone. If a sealer is specified, confirm that it is suitable for the intended pool-water exposure and ask what future maintenance it requires.
Best for: villas going for a natural, resort-lagoon aesthetic where owners are prepared for a bit more upkeep.
What We’d Actually Ask You Before Recommending Anything
- How much hands-on maintenance are you realistically going to do; or pay someone else to do? This alone rules out half the options for a lot of people.
- Is the pool used year-round or seasonally? A pool that sits idle for months needs more forgiving material than one in daily use.
- What’s the water source; municipal, well, or desalinated? Water hardness affects staining risk differently across tile types.
- Sun exposure- is the pool shaded part of the day, or in full sun all day? Full-sun pools see more UV fading over time, which pushes the decision toward glass or porcelain over lower-grade ceramic.
A Mistake We See Often
Choosing a tile based on a sample viewed indoors, under normal lighting. Tile color shifts noticeably once it’s underwater and lit by pool lighting at night; a tile that looked pale blue in a showroom can read almost teal once installed. If at all possible, ask to see the exact tile in an installed pool, not just a dry sample board, before committing.
Retiling an Existing Pool vs. Starting Fresh
If you’re retiling rather than building new, the condition of the substrate underneath matters as much as the tile choice itself. Cracked or hollow-sounding tiles are often a sign of a bonding issue below the surface, not just a cosmetic problem; and tiling over that without addressing it just means the same cracks reappear within a year or two. A proper retiling job checks and repairs the substrate first.
